Max Cryle and his team have revealed a novel mechanism in glycopeptide antibiotics (GPA) biosynthesis that may help in the development of new antibiotics. Their findings were published in Chemical Science.

Dr Martino has been awarded an NHMRC Investigator Grant to develop new regenerative strategies. He aims to reveal how the immune system influences the repair and regeneration of different tissues and organs, such as the heart and the lung.

The EMBL Australia PLN Secretariat hosted a visit from Director-General Jean-Eric Paquet, Research and Innovation, European Commission at Monash University on July 24th, followed by a public event at the National Gallery of Victoria with Prof James Whisstock, Scientific Head EMBL Australia, and Bernie Hobbs, ABC Broadcaster.

Australian PhD students in the life sciences are eligible to apply for one of 10 travel grants of $2000 to attend the 21st EMBL PhD Symposium in Heidelberg, Germany, on 28 to 30 November 2019.

New research by Group Leader Max Cryle about an unusual antibiotic has great implications for future antibiotics.

In 2018, the EMBL Australia Partner Laboratory Network continued to expand, with four new group leaders and one new host institution joining the network. Our researchers published significant papers, were awarded a number of grants to expand their innovative research and strengthened international ties with the EMBL via a three-day delegation to tour facilities and initiate research collaborations.

Professor Eduardo Eyras joined the Partner Laboratory Network as a Group Leader at ANU in March. He is working on understanding the biology of RNA and cancer using computational methods.

EMBL Australia Group Leaders are currently offering scholarships to outstanding students who are eager to work in their laboratories and on their projects.
